Actress and singer Shaffy Bello recently opened up about her decision to undergo a permanent form of birth control, revealing that she tied her tubes 26 years ago. Speaking on her YouTube channel, the 55-year-old explained that the procedure, commonly known as tubal ligation, was her way of ensuring she would not have a large family.
Shaffy shared that she made the choice after careful consideration, fully aware of the family size she wanted.
While her former husband hoped they would have more children, she remained firm in her decision. “My ex-husband had to beg me to have another one. I didn’t want a lot of children. I wanted to stop,” she said.
She also described how the procedure was performed. “They went through my navel, went in there, did what they needed to do, and they tied it up. That was it.
They closed my eggs,” Shaffy explained. Despite the permanence of the procedure, she said she has always maintained a sense of humor about the situation.
She joked that if she were to become pregnant after the surgery, she would consider it a miraculous or special event. “I’ve always said to myself that after tying my tubes, if I get pregnant, I will feel like Mary, it’s a holy child,” she added.
Shaffy Bello’s career path has also been marked by bold personal choices. Born in Nigeria but having spent part of her formative years in the United States, she returned to Nigeria to pursue acting opportunities in Nollywood.
She first gained recognition in the late 1990s after appearing in a music video and has since featured in numerous Nollywood films and television series.
Her decision to pursue her career in Nigeria came with significant personal sacrifices. In previous interviews, Shaffy revealed that she left her husband and teenage children in the United States to build her career in Nollywood. This move, while pivotal for her professional growth, contributed to the eventual end of her marriage.
Shaffy’s story reflects the balance many women navigate between personal choices, family expectations, and career ambitions.
Her candidness about her reproductive decisions and professional sacrifices provides an inspiring example for women seeking autonomy over their lives.
She has shown that prioritizing one’s personal and professional goals, even in the face of societal or familial pressure, is possible with determination and clarity of purpose.
By sharing her experiences, Shaffy Bello continues to influence conversations around women’s health, family planning, and the challenges of maintaining personal agency in a demanding industry.
Her openness not only sheds light on the realities faced by women in Nigeria but also reinforces the importance of making informed and intentional choices in both personal and professional spheres.
