“I Have Been A Muslim For 38 Years, And I Know Islam Well” — Asari Dokubo Fires Back At Gumi

Niger Delta activist and Kalabari chief, Asari Dokubo, has responded sharply to comments made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, saying he is not new to Islam and understands the faith deeply. Speaking in a video shared on Facebook, Dokubo stated that he has practiced Islam for nearly four decades and will not accept any suggestion that he lacks knowledge of the religion.

“I have been a Muslim for 38 years, and I know Islam well,” he said. Dokubo explained that his long-standing commitment to the faith allows him to speak on religious and moral matters, adding that Islam stands for truth, justice, and peace—not division or violence.

He accused Gumi of making statements that could fuel misunderstanding among Nigerians, warning that using religion for political or sectarian purposes threatens the nation’s unity. Dokubo urged Islamic leaders to emphasize the true values of Islam, such as compassion, fairness, and respect for humanity.

His remarks have since generated wide reactions online, with some Nigerians praising his courage and others calling for dialogue and unity among religious leaders.
