“I Paid for Their Flight, But They Never Paid Me Back” – Mikel Obi Slams NFF Over 2016 Rio Olympics

Eight years after rescuing Nigeria’s Olympic football dream with his own money, John Obi Mikel says he’s still waiting for a refund from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In a recent episode of his podcast, shared via The Pickers, the former Super Eagles captain and Chelsea legend opened up about the shocking events leading up to the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he personally paid for a charter flight to get the Nigerian team to Brazil.

“We were literally stranded. No flight. No logistics. Nothing. I had to step in, or we would’ve missed the tournament entirely.”

“I Paid for a Private Jet—They Never Reimbursed Me”

Mikel revealed that despite a government-approved budget, the funds meant for the team’s travel were allegedly withheld by corrupt officials. With the clock ticking, the midfielder took matters into his own hands.

“I spoke to the coach. We found a plane, and I paid for it. I thought they’d reimburse me when we returned… but up till now—nothing.”

Despite his efforts and the team’s eventual success—winning Bronze and making Nigeria the only African team to medal in football at Rio 2016—the NFF never refunded him.

“They thought, ‘It’s Mikel, he can afford it.’ But it’s not about the money—it’s the principle. It’s the respect,” he said.

A Sacrifice That Cost Him His Chelsea Career

Mikel’s decision to prioritize Nigeria over club commitments came at a personal price. His choice didn’t sit well with then Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, and he never played for the club again. He later moved to China to continue his football career.

“I lost my spot in Chelsea because of that Olympics. But seeing those young boys win a medal and go back home proud—that made it worth it.”

No Regrets, But Still No Accountability

While Mikel says he doesn’t regret the sacrifice, the situation reflects the deep-rooted issues in Nigerian sports administration—where athletes often have to save themselves.

“It’s sad. After everything, they didn’t even say ‘thank you,’ let alone refund me. That’s the mentality we’re dealing with.”

As of 2025, there has been no official comment from the NFF regarding Mikel’s claims. But for fans and fellow athletes, his story is another painful reminder of how Nigerian heroes are often left abandoned after flying the country’s flag with pride.

Should the NFF refund Mikel Obi after 8 years—or is it too late? Drop your thoughts below.
