Afrobeats megastar Davido has taken a reflective walk down memory lane, sharing a personal story about his early struggles and passion for music long before fame found him. The Grammy-nominated singer opened up about his formative years and the sacrifices he made in pursuit of his dream, including a daring decision to skip school for a performance back in 2011.

The multiple award-winning artist, who has since become one of the most influential figures in global Afrobeats, revealed on X that over a decade ago, he left school in Babcock University to perform in Ibadan—an experience that marked one of his earliest major appearances.

“In 2011, I skipped school to perform in Ibadan. Asa, Peju, B Red and Sina picked me up from Babcock, and we drove to join the Lynxxx and Friends Tour. I had no idea it was going to air on Soundcity, and when my pops saw it, I got in so much trouble,” Davido recalled.

That youthful decision, though risky, has now become part of his inspiring journey to superstardom. Fourteen years later, the same city where he once performed as a student has become one of the biggest stops on his nationwide 5ive Alive Tour, which has seen thousands of fans gather to celebrate his success.

“14 years later, we destroyed the stadium. The 5ive Alive run across Nigeria has been one for the books,” he added, reflecting on his remarkable growth from an ambitious teenager with a dream to a global Afrobeats powerhouse capable of selling out arenas.

The 5ive Alive Tour, which has already thrilled fans in several Nigerian cities, has been widely described as one of the most successful concert runs in the country this year. The shows have featured energetic performances, massive turnouts, and collaborations with fellow top artists, reaffirming Davido’s reputation as one of Africa’s most dynamic live performers.

Beyond the nostalgia, Davido used the moment to send a message of empowerment and responsibility to his peers in the music industry. He encouraged other successful entertainers to look inward and invest in their communities rather than seeking validation abroad.

“To my peers, let’s build back home and give back to our roots. Big love to all our sponsors for backing this historic tour,” he urged.

The superstar’s message echoes his long-standing commitment to giving back, which has included philanthropic initiatives such as donations to orphanages and support for young creatives.

As his Nigerian tour continues, Davido is gearing up for two more major stops in Abuja and Lagos, expected to wrap up the local leg of the 5ive Alive experience. After that, he will take the celebration beyond Nigeria’s borders.

“Abuja and Lagos up next, but next stop is ATL for my birthday, State Farm Arena on November 20th,” he announced, revealing that he will mark his birthday with a headline concert at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 20th, just a day before he turns a year older.

From skipping school for a small performance to selling out stadiums across continents, Davido’s journey has come full circle—a testament to his hard work, persistence, and deep connection to his roots.
