“I Thought They Were Shooting A Film” — Soyinka Slams ‘Battalion-Level’ Security For Seyi Tinubu

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has raised serious concerns about what he described as an excessive and alarming level of security attached to Seyi Tinubu, the son of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The globally renowned writer and activist spoke after a video went viral showing Seyi surrounded by what appeared to be a heavily armed security formation during a visit to a hotel in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Soyinka explained that he was stunned when he walked into the hotel and encountered what looked like a “small battalion” of security operatives stationed around the premises. According to him, his first instinct was that a movie was being filmed due to the dramatic, military-style presence.

He recounted: “A young man came over and greeted me, very polite, very nice. That was when I asked if they were shooting a film, and he said no.”

The Nobel Laureate said he became visibly disturbed when he learned that the intimidating security arrangement was meant solely for Seyi Tinubu. Expressing disbelief, he stated: “I was told this is how the young man moves around. I couldn’t believe that a child of the head of state goes around with an army for his protection.”

Soyinka warned that such a massive deployment of national security resources to protect the president’s son sends the wrong message about governance, public priorities, and national security management.

He added: “Children should know their place. They are not heads of state. The security architecture of a nation suffers when we see such devotion of troops to one young individual.”

In a sharp, sarcastic remark, he urged the president to redirect those troops to serve the nation in times of real crisis. “The next time there is an insurrection, the president should just call that young man. He has enough troops under his command,” he said.

Soyinka’s comments have reignited public debate about privilege, security excesses, and accountability within Nigeria’s political leadership.
