Hollywood star Idris Elba has revealed that he is considering retiring from acting as he explores a new direction in his career, signalling a possible shift behind the camera.
The actor made the disclosure during a question-and-answer session at the Red Sea International Film Festival, where he spoke openly about his evolving interests and long-term goals. While acknowledging how central acting has been to his life and career, Elba explained that he now feels increasingly drawn to other creative and purposeful pursuits.
According to the award-winning actor, directing is an area he hopes to fully embrace in the future. He admitted that although acting remains close to his heart, the desire to challenge himself in new ways has influenced his thinking.
“I’m hoping my fan base isn’t mad at me, but eventually I want to be a full-time director. I’ve been acting for a long time, and I still love it, but directing lets me flex different muscles and be part of the set in a completely new way,” he said.
Elba further shared that his ambitions extend beyond film and television. He expressed a strong interest in using his platform to positively influence society, particularly through philanthropy and activism.
The British actor clarified that while he has no plans to enter politics, he is keen on gaining deeper knowledge that would allow him to create meaningful change. He noted that understanding people and society remains a key motivation behind his next steps.
“I don’t want to be a politician. But I want to educate myself so I can make real impact, especially with the activism and philanthropy work I’ve been involved in. I may study human science because understanding people is at the heart of everything,” Elba added.
Elba’s comments have since sparked conversations among fans and industry watchers, many of whom see his potential transition as a natural evolution for an actor with decades of experience.
