According to our reporter, PDP chieftain Segun Showunmi has warned that the party could fail to field candidates in the 2027 elections if its current leadership crisis continues. His concern follows former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido being denied access to forms for the National Chairman election.
Speaking on Channels TV, Showunmi predicted a flood of legal battles. “The cases that will come as a result of this are just going to be enormous. If we are not careful, we will not have candidates in 2027 because you cannot tell me that Sule Lamido will not go to court,” he said.
Showunmi also expressed frustration over the lack of clarity on zoning arrangements. “Some of us have just said, ‘Okay, let’s just leave them to exhaust themselves.’ Otherwise, I would like to contest for national secretary, assuming it was zoned to us. What is zoned to my state? Nobody knows,” he added.
He criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, accusing him of manipulating party processes. “So Seyi Makinde is going to sit there, manipulate the party, suddenly pick the secretary, pick everything, run everything? Why did he even join our party?” Showunmi questioned.
The PDP chieftain also challenged Makinde’s party credentials, noting his history with other political parties. “The last I checked—except when he was coming to be governor here—he was not even a member of the party. But only the parent that knows the value of a baby can look after it,” he said.
Showunmi argued that fear of competition seems to be driving irrational decisions and suggested that these maneuvers could deliberately weaken the party’s effectiveness.
