In The Western Area, You Can Hardly Find A Home That Will Not Have Christians And Muslims–George

Former PDP Deputy National Chairman Chief Bode George has stressed that Nigeria’s religious and tribal divisions are largely a legacy of British colonial rule, highlighting examples of peaceful coexistence in the country’s western region. Speaking in an interview on Thursday, George said the colonial administration deliberately fostered divisions among ethnic and religious groups to consolidate power and prevent the rise of a united Nigerian identity.

He explained that these divisions were reinforced through artificial administrative boundaries, unequal regional development, and biased educational policies, creating lasting rivalries and suspicion among different groups. “The legacy of colonial manipulation continues to shape our political and social systems decades after independence,” George noted.

Emphasizing Nigeria’s diversity as a potential strength, George pointed out that in the western region, it is common to find families made up of Christians, Muslims, and traditional believers living together peacefully. “This shows that religion and ethnicity are not the real problem—they have only been weaponized for selfish reasons,” he said, urging political leaders to learn from this natural coexistence.

Chief George called for stronger efforts to promote national unity through justice, fairness, and inclusive governance. He stressed that policies should focus on merit and equal opportunity rather than ethnic or religious favoritism, and he highlighted the need for equitable implementation of the federal character principle to ensure all regions feel represented.

He concluded that Nigeria’s development depends on collective cooperation, sincere leadership, and reconciliation to overcome historical divisions. “Understanding how colonialism shaped our political and social structures is the first step toward designing solutions that truly unite us,” George said.
