Lionel Messi is set to receive one of the biggest honours of his career as India prepares to unveil a towering 21-meter statue of the football icon during his three-day “GOAT Tour.”
The excitement across the country has surged ahead of the Argentine star’s arrival, marking a historic moment for football fans in India and beyond.
Fresh from guiding Inter Miami to a remarkable MLS Cup victory, Messi will touch down in Kolkata alongside club teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul.
The trio is expected to draw massive crowds as they participate in a series of high-profile events across four major cities. The highlight of the tour remains Saturday’s unveiling of Messi’s 70-foot statue, a massive structure crafted over 27 days by a dedicated 45-man construction crew.
The statue, described as one of the largest sporting monuments in Asia, reflects the depth of admiration Messi enjoys among Indian fans. Kolkata, a city known for its deep football culture, is taking centre stage as thousands prepare to welcome the World Cup winner with elaborate celebrations.
Messi’s tour begins at 10:30am local time on Saturday, before moving to Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi. Organisers have also constructed a special ‘Hola Messi’ fan zone, designed as a full-scale tribute to the legendary forward.
The fan zone includes a life-sized model of Messi seated on a throne, a trophy hall showcasing replicas of his most iconic career honours, and a recreated model of his Miami home complete with mannequin figures representing his family.
Fans have described the moment as emotional and unforgettable. One fan, Shiladitya Banerjee, said he could hardly hold back tears while witnessing the preparations.
“He would be surprised to see the arrangements made for him,” he said. “He would be shocked to see how he is worshipped in Kolkata and across India. I am tearing up but these are happy tears.”
The GOAT debate — whether Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pelé or Diego Maradona stands as the greatest of all time — may never be settled, but India appears to have chosen its favourite. The scale of the statue and the nationwide celebrations speak volumes about the deep affection Messi commands.
As Messi continues his global influence both on and off the pitch, this honour from India shows how far-reaching his legacy has become. The tour is expected to attract fans, tourists, and global media, turning it into one of the most talked-about football events of the year.
The celebration also highlights India’s growing involvement in international sports and its admiration for global icons who have shaped modern football.
For Messi’s supporters, the unveiling of the towering statue is more than an artistic creation it is a symbol of devotion to a player whose greatness has inspired millions.
