‘It’s not your Father’s house’

Former Senator representing Kaduna Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has strongly advised Nigerians and other African nationals affected by visa revocations under the Donald Trump administration to return home immediately.

The Senator warned that foreign citizens whose visas were canceled should leave the U.S. voluntarily before Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) initiates enforcement action.

Sani emphasized the fundamental difference between living abroad and one’s native country. He reminded Nigerians and Africans living overseas that no matter how long they reside in foreign countries, they can never be fully integrated, stressing that their true home remains their country of origin.

He delivered the stark message via social media: “Nigerians and other thousands of Africans whose visas were recently revoked by President Trump should hasten and leave the country and return home before they get arrested by ICE.

No matter how long you live in the comfort of your adopted home, you will someday be reminded that it’s not your father’s house.”

The Senator’s call follows a widespread immigration enforcement initiative by the Trump administration. The United States Department of State confirmed it revoked the visas of more than 80,000 individuals, including Nigerians and other foreign nationals.

The Department stated that the action was in line with Trump’s commitment to protecting U.S. national interests and security. According to the department, the revocations were based on various offenses, including assault, theft, and driving under the influence (DUI).

Data from 2024 showed that 16,000 individuals lost their visas due to DUI-related offenses, 12,000 for assault, and 8,000 for theft.

Additional reasons for the cancellations included links to terrorism, extremist activity, public safety risks, and violations of visa conditions.
