Yusuf Kofarmata, the Kano State Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, has resigned from his position, citing concerns over the direction of the state government.
Kofarmata announced his resignation in a statement posted on his Facebook page, where he said he could no longer serve under the current administration. “I cannot continue to work under a government that has derailed from the ideology that brought it to power,” he said.
The former commissioner, who is a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), said his decision was taken in good faith.
His resignation comes just days after Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf formally resigned from the NNPP. The governor cited “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” within the party as reasons for his decision.
Yusuf resigned alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.
In December, supporters of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano governor and national leader of the NNPP, under the platform of the Kwankwasiyya movement, had openly discussed the possibility of defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to give their leader a “better shot” at the presidency.
Abdullahi Rogo, Director General of the Protocol Directorate at the Kano State Government House, said at the time that such a move would be in the best interest of the state. He added that members of the movement had appealed to Governor Yusuf and Kwankwaso to lead them into the ruling APC.
Governor Yusuf met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House on January 19 and formally resigned from the NNPP four days later, on January 23.
The NNPP has since expressed disappointment over the governor’s resignation, describing the move as a betrayal of the mandate given to him by voters.
