Constitutional lawyer Fred Nzeako has stated that Nnamdi Kanu’s past verbal attacks on former President Muhammadu Buhari cannot serve as grounds for terrorism charges. He argued that offensive remarks, while inappropriate, fall under civil matters and should not influence the court’s judgment on the IPOB leader’s case.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Nzeako explained that insults or harsh criticism directed at a president do not constitute criminal conduct under Nigerian law. He stressed that only actions such as insulting a presiding judge or misbehaving in court could amount to contempt, and even then, they cannot be substituted for a terrorism offence.
Nzeako recalled that Buhari, during his tenure, chose to interpret Kanu’s critical remarks as a criminal act—a decision he believes was highly questionable. He emphasized that Kanu was a strong critic of the former president and frequently expressed his dissatisfaction with the administration.
According to Nzeako, a civil offence cannot be elevated into a terrorism charge simply because it involves the president. He noted that while Kanu’s choice of words may have been harsh, it remains a matter for civil litigation, not a criminal prosecution.
