The recent conviction of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has stirred renewed debate across Nigeria, arriving at a time when the country is already grappling with economic hardship, insecurity, and public dissatisfaction. Rather than easing tensions, many observers fear this development may deepen national divisions.
In a Facebook post, Joe Igbokwe argued that Kanu’s arrest, long detention, and eventual conviction should not have occurred in the first place. He described the situation as a missed opportunity for leadership to address long-standing grievances through dialogue rather than force.
Igbokwe maintained that the concerns raised by Kanu were not beyond political engagement or inclusive conversation. According to him, effective governance requires empathy and consultation before resorting to coercive measures that risk alienating citizens.
He added that while the judicial outcome may satisfy those focused solely on legal procedure, it falls short of addressing the broader political and social implications. Around the world, governments dealing with separatist tensions often pair legal steps with negotiated solutions, reforms, or confidence-building initiatives to preserve national cohesion.
Igbokwe warned that Nigeria’s current approach could widen mistrust at a time when citizens are already struggling with rising prices, security concerns, and reduced opportunities. He emphasized that sustainable peace will require a shift toward reconciliation, fairness, and meaningful dialogue.
