Nollywood actor Kunle Remi has moved to clear the air following the controversy that trailed his recent comment about the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), which many initially interpreted as criticism of the award process.

The conversation began after the actor shared a clip from the Academy Awards, showing Hollywood star Michael B. Jordan having his award engraved almost immediately after winning.

Reacting to the moment, Kunle Remi suggested that winners at the AMVCA do not receive their plaques instantly, a remark that quickly gained traction across social media platforms and sparked widespread debate.

Many fans and observers took his statement seriously, with some interpreting it as a subtle jab at the credibility and efficiency of the AMVCA.

The comparison between the African award platform and the globally recognised Oscars ignited discussions about standards, organisation, and how African award shows can continue to improve their processes.

However, in a follow-up video shared shortly after the backlash, Kunle Remi clarified that his earlier statement was never meant to be taken literally. According to him, the comment was made in jest and was simply part of a lighthearted moment on social media.

“I was just messing around, and it was all a joke,” he explained, stressing that people had read too much meaning into what was intended as a playful observation. The actor further noted that he fully understands how the AMVCA operates and holds the platform in high regard.

Reaffirming his stance, Kunle Remi described the AMVCA as a prestigious platform that continues to celebrate excellence in African film and television. He went on to state that, in his opinion, it remains the only African award ceremony that can be placed in the same conversation as the Oscars.

“AMVCA is the only African show you can even compare to the Oscars,” he added, highlighting his respect for the organisers and the role the awards play in promoting the continent’s entertainment industry.

His clarification appears to have calmed tensions, although the incident has once again brought attention to how quickly social media conversations can escalate, especially when public figures are involved. It also underscores the sensitivity surrounding comparisons between African institutions and their international counterparts.

The AMVCA, organised by Africa Magic, has grown over the years to become one of the most anticipated events in the African entertainment calendar, recognising outstanding achievements in film, television, and digital content.

While debates about its processes and standards are not new, moments like this often reignite conversations about how the platform can evolve further.

In the end, Kunle Remi’s clarification serves as a reminder of the importance of context in online communication. What may start as a joke can easily be misconstrued, especially in an era where snippets of content travel fast and are often consumed without full context.

Despite the brief controversy, the actor’s reaffirmation of his respect for the AMVCA reinforces the award’s standing as a leading force in celebrating African storytelling on a global stage.
