The Police Administration has closed down the Kwame Danso Police Station and the District Police Headquarters in the Bono East Region after a mob attacked the station and the district court to free two suspects who were standing trial.
Subsequently, the police has withdrawn and reassigned all personnel deployed in the area to other parts of the region until further notice.
The police announced the closure of the stations and withdrawal of personnel in a press statement signed by the acting Bono East Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Appiah Danquah.
The statement explained that it acted on the instructions of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Incident
The police in the statement explained that the incident occurred on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at about 10:30 a.m.
It said the court was in session when an irate mob of about 100 youth besieged the court premises, attacked persons at the court and vandalised furniture, fans and other items belonging to the court.
It further explained that the agitated youth forcibly freed two accused persons who were standing trial and assaulted the complainant in the case.
“The violence later escalated as the youth attacked two police officers who were on duty at the Kwame Danso Police Headquarters and succeeded in vandalising the police station,” the statement further indicated.
Calm restored
However, the statement said a reinforcement team from the Atebubu Division, together with a detachment of the Formed Police Units (FPUs), arrived at the scene to restore law and order in the community.
The statement assured the public, particularly the people in the area that the command would pursue and track down all persons connected to the “criminal act”.
It assured that all the perpetrators would be identified, arrested and made to face the full consequences of the law.
JUSAG
Meanwhile, the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has, in a press statement, called on the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, to immediately shut down the court.
It explained that the safety of staff and other court users could not be guaranteed at the facility.
The Daily Graphic gathered that the court was hearing the case of The Republic vs Isaac Kwabena Mintah and two others.
The suspects were said to have been charged with unlawful damage, stealing and assault under the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The youth, who were unhappy about their colleague’s trial, were reported to have first gathered at the police station before storming the courtroom with offensive weapons to disrupt the proceedings.
In a video shared on social media, some court staff were seen fleeing as an angry mob pursued them.
Other staff members who were unable to escape before the attackers arrived at the facility locked themselves inside their offices.
The angry youth were said to have attempted to break into the magistrate’s chambers.
Interview
In an interview, ASP Danquah explained that the suspects were standing trial because they went to the complaint’s cottage near Kwame Danso to assault him and destroyed his personal property, including a palm leaves structures he erected to house him and his family.
He said the complaint reported the destruction incident to the police and also accused them of stealing his phones and an undisclosed amount of money.
ASP Danquah explained that, after the complaint, the police issued a criminal summons through the court to the suspects, who appeared before the court.
He said the court remanded them into police custody,” and before the police could even move them, the irate youth stormed the court to forcibly free the remanded prisoners and caused destruction at the court.
ASP Danquah said that until the attackers were arrested, the police could not establish their motivation or the nature of their relationship with the suspects.
“As of now, we can’t tell what motivated their actions. For now, we may just be guessing the reason behind the youth action.
But the police are investigating to ascertain the real cause,” he said.
ASP Danquah, however, said the complaint told the police that those who assaulted and destroyed his property at the cottage were many, but he managed to identify those standing trial.
