American singer and songwriter, Lizzo has revealed that she stayed a virgin until her 30s because of a personal promise she made to herself when she was younger.
The 37-year-old artist, who disclosed this during an appearance on the “Friends Keep Secret” podcast, said she had decided long ago that she would not have sex until she won a Grammy Awards.
“I wasn’t even thinking about it. I just promised myself when I was younger that I would want to have sex until I won a Grammy,” she said.
Even after finally winning her first Grammy in 2020, Lizzo said intimacy still was not something she immediately thought about.
“After I won a Grammy in 2020, it was not even in my cards,” she said.
She also admitted that she sometimes felt embarrassed about still being a virgin, especially when spending time with friends, and on some occasions, she lied about it to avoid awkward conversations.
“It was so embarrassing. I was in a friend group of girls… ‘Wait, Lizzo are you a virgin?’ And I remember being like, ‘No!’” she said.
The singer further revealed that she did not have her first kiss until she was 21, explaining that her religious upbringing also influenced her choices.
“It was religious for me too… we made a pact that we wouldn’t do anything before marriage,” she said.
During the 2020 Grammys, Lizzo won three awards, including Best Pop Solo Performance for Truth Hurts, Best Urban Contemporary Album for Cuz I Love You (Deluxe), and Best Traditional R&B Performance for Jerome.
KanyiDaily recalls that Lizzo previously revealed her decision to step away from the music industry, citing relentless online trolling over her appearance as the primary reason for her decision.
