President John Dramani Mahama has directed a 100% expansion in security services recruitment after a high-level meeting held on Monday, March 16, 2026.
This comes after the President met with heads of key security agencies and senior government officials, including the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed and the Acting Minister for Defence, Cassiel Ato Forson.
Officials briefed the President on the ongoing recruitment process across multiple security institutions, and after reviewing the updates, he ordered a significant increase in the number of recruits.
According to the Presidency Communications Directorate, the government plans to double recruitment from 20,000 to 40,000 personnel.
The President also instructed security leaders to uphold strict standards throughout the process.
Earlier, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak outlined the scale of interest in the programme. He revealed that more than 105,000 applicants had passed the initial screening stages.
Despite this large pool, the government initially planned to recruit only 5,000 candidates this year, hence denied the 105,000 passed applicants entry, citing financial constraints as the main limiting factor.
Many applicants expressed concern about their chances of selection under those conditions.
However, the Minister encouraged unsuccessful candidates to remain hopeful, stating that authorities would retain data from qualified applicants for future opportunities.
He also hinted at another intake planned after Ghana concludes its programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The President’s new directive now changes those projections significantly.
The revised plan suggests an average intake of 10,000 recruits per year, doubling earlier estimates and signalling a more ambitious rollout.
However, the announcement has triggered mixed reactions among citizens, with the majority questioning whether the government can sustain the financial burden.
Public discussions have also introduced a political dimension to the decision. Some citizens speculate that the move could serve electoral or strategic National Democratic Congress (NDC) party interests.
