A federal grand jury has charged a 33-year-old Ohio man for threatening to kill US Vice President JD Vance during his visit to the state in January.
In a statement on Friday, the Justice Department revealed that Shannon Mathre, a resident of Toledo, Ohio, is accused of “making a threat to take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon” the vice president.
Mathre reportedly said he was “going to find out where he (the vice president) is going to be and use my M14 automatic gun and kill him,” according to the statement which did not specify where the comment was made.
Mathre was arrested on Friday by US Secret Service agents.
Earlier in January, Vance said “a crazy person” had attempted to break into his Ohio home by hammering on the windows.
Vance and his family were not home at the time, and a 26-year-old man was taken into custody, according to media reports.
The Justice Department also revealed that investigators found “multiple digital files of child sexual abuse materials” while looking into Mathre’s threat against Vance.
Mathre appeared in court for the first time on Friday before a US Magistrate Judge in the Northern District of Ohio.
He remains in custody ahead of a detention hearing scheduled for February 11.
