A woman from Nyandarua County, identified as Mary, has opened up about her challenging upbringing and how difficult life circumstances led her to raise three children on her own. Her story, shared in a recent interview, has drawn empathy from many who relate to the realities of poverty, broken promises, and survival.
Mary explained that she grew up in a family of seven children where financial hardship was common. She left school after completing Class Eight due to lack of fees and sought work at a young age to support herself. Over the years, she took on various jobs — from casual labour on farms and tea plantations to small hustles — in an effort to make ends meet.
She became a mother early in life, and each time, the men involved declined responsibility. Despite the emotional and financial strain, Mary said her motivation to provide for her children pushed her to keep trying different opportunities. She eventually secured work abroad, where she has spent several years supporting her children, her mother, and even some of her siblings.
Although she has never been in a long-term romantic relationship, Mary believes her dedication to her family will eventually be rewarded and hopes that one day she will meet a partner who values her story and resilience.
