The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has officially affirmed its readiness to host a successful Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), despite the lingering controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
This statement comes in the wake of the contentious ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which awarded Morocco the AFCON 2025 title after overturning Senegal’s 1-0 victory in the January 18 final.
The decision sparked widespread debate across African football, particularly after Senegal staged a 17-minute walk-off in protest against a stoppage-time penalty awarded to Morocco.
CAF’s Appeals Committee cited Article 82 of its regulations, which stipulates that any team leaving the field without the referee’s consent automatically forfeits the match.
This ruling handed Morocco a 3-0 victory, securing their first AFCON title in 50 years. Unsurprisingly, Senegal has rejected this outcome and has confirmed its intention to appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), ensuring the controversy continues to unfold in international sports forums.
In response, the FRMF emphasized that its focus is not to dispute the sporting merit of the final but to uphold the integrity and rules of African football.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the federation highlighted its adherence to proper procedures, including submitting arguments and participating fully in hearings.
The FRMF expressed confidence that CAF’s ruling would provide a clear framework for handling similar incidents in future competitions.
Looking ahead, the Moroccan FA confirmed that its attention has shifted to upcoming sporting events, particularly the FIFA World Cup and the Women’s AFCON scheduled for this summer.
The federation assured all participating nations of its commitment to fair play, highlighting its ongoing dedication to the growth and development of African football at all levels.
Through this proactive stance, Morocco is signaling its preparedness to host a smooth and competitive WAFCON tournament.
The federation’s statement also underscores the importance of transparency, rules compliance, and collaboration with continental and international bodies to ensure equitable competition.
By championing these principles, the FRMF hopes to reinforce confidence among teams, fans, and stakeholders alike, while continuing to elevate the profile of women’s football in Africa.
As anticipation builds for the Women’s AFCON, Morocco’s readiness to host a high-standard tournament is a promising step forward for African football.
Beyond the shadow of controversy, the federation aims to showcase its organizational capabilities and promote the continued development of the sport across the continent. Fans can expect a competitive, fair, and well-organized tournament that reflects the best of African football.
