Nigerian singer Qing Madi has described the music industry as extremely lucrative, comparing it to the earnings in the drug trade.
Speaking on the Tea With Tay podcast, the 19-year-old singer, whose real name is Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, highlighted the enormous financial potential available to successful artists, stressing that one show could earn an artist more than the average Nigerian employee makes in years.
She emphasized that music has granted her financial freedom, but she deliberately avoids flaunting her wealth on social media, explaining that she doesn’t want money to define her public image.
“Music money is not normal, it is like drug money. I don’t think people know how… And I’m not the person who would buy stuff and put on the media because I do think that would change the narrative of what I am to the media. And I don’t like people looking at me and seeing money.
But I am rich,” Madi said. She further illustrated the scale of earnings in the industry by comparing typical salaries, noting that while an average Nigerian might earn around N500,000 per month working a 9-5 job, an artist can earn N20 million from a single show.
Her comments underline the significant financial opportunities available in music, which can dramatically alter an artist’s lifestyle and independence.
Beyond financial aspects, Madi reflected on why music resonates so deeply with Nigerians. She suggested that one reason could be the limited access to mental health services in the country, with many people turning to music for therapy and escapism. According to her, the emotional and cultural role of music is as critical as its economic impact.
Madi also spoke candidly about the challenges and realities within the Nigerian music industry. While she enjoys the benefits of financial freedom, she acknowledges the presence of predatory practices targeting young artists, particularly women, in a highly competitive and sometimes exploitative environment.
Her perspective provides insight into both the allure and the pitfalls of pursuing a career in music, highlighting the balance between opportunity and vulnerability.
Despite the pressures and challenges, Madi’s success demonstrates that talent combined with strategy and prudence can lead to remarkable rewards.
She remains conscious of her personal brand, choosing discretion over public displays of wealth, which she believes preserves her identity and focus as an artist.
Through her statements, Qing Madi not only highlights the staggering earnings possible in Nigerian music but also the responsibility that comes with fame and financial success, offering a rare glimpse into the industry from the perspective of a young, rising star.
Her reflections serve as both inspiration and caution for emerging artists navigating the complex landscape of Nigerian entertainment.
