Record producer Samklef has sparked controversy with claims that singer Davido is responsible for introducing toxicity and rivalry into the Nigerian music industry.
His comments came in response to a tweet by fellow producer-turned-singer Pheelz, who expressed concern about the rising comparisons and unhealthy competition among artists.
Pheelz lamented, “Music was meant to be enjoyed, not to be compared. This comparison game is hurting the sound and culture more than we can ever know.”
In his response, Samklef reminisced about a time when the Nigerian music industry was characterized by mutual respect and camaraderie. He noted that during the reign of Wizkid and Olamide, there was minimal rivalry, and artists focused purely on creating and enjoying music.
According to him, the environment was supportive, collaborative, and free from the competitive toxicity that plagues the industry today.
However, Samklef claims that everything changed with the emergence of Davido. He alleged that the singer’s entry brought with it a “cultist mindset,” threats, fraudulent streaming practices, and unhealthy competition among artists. Samklef described the shift as a turning point in the industry, saying, “Music was fun when we started.
When Wizkid came, there was no comparison—everything was pure love. Olamide came too, same thing. No pressure, no hatred, just music.
Then one Scorpio boy who moves like Diddy… Davido entered, and since then the industry turned toxic. Cultist mindset, threats, fake streams, dirty moves everywhere.”
These remarks have sparked mixed reactions across social media and music circles, with many criticizing Samklef for singling out Davido for what some perceive as broader industry issues.
While some fans and industry insiders agreed that competition has intensified and streaming fraud has become more common, others argued that placing the blame solely on Davido is unfair and neglects the systemic challenges facing Nigerian music today.
Despite the backlash, Davido has not publicly responded to Samklef’s allegations, leaving the discussion ongoing and fueling debates about the current state of the music industry.
Meanwhile, conversations continue online about the influence of star rivalries, comparison culture, and how the rise of social media and digital streaming has reshaped relationships between artists.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the Nigerian music scene, where competition, online debates, and public scrutiny increasingly impact artists’ reputations.
Industry observers argue that while rivalry is part of any creative field, maintaining professionalism, respect, and collaboration remains crucial for preserving the culture and growth of Nigerian music.
This latest controversy adds to a series of public exchanges involving top artists like Wizkid, Davido, and emerging stars, reflecting the dynamic and sometimes contentious nature of Nigeria’s entertainment landscape.
As discussions unfold, the focus remains on balancing healthy competition with artistic integrity and sustaining a thriving music culture.
