Nasir El-Rufai Remanded In Custody As Court Fixes Bail Hearing For April 14

A Federal High Court in Kaduna has set April 14, 2026, to rule on the bail request filed by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

El-Rufai arrived at the Kaduna court around 9 a.m. on Wednesday wearing a light brown outfit and cap, as security operatives maintained a heavy presence around the court complex.

The tight security followed expectations that supporters and political figures would gather in large numbers.

The former governor had filed the bail application through his legal team on Tuesday while awaiting the continuation of his trial.

During Wednesday’s hearing, lawyers for both sides presented their final submissions on whether El-Rufai should be granted bail.

El-Rufai’s lead lawyer, Iyamu Oyewole, told the court that bail is a right guaranteed by the constitution, arguing that the former governor has strong roots in Nigeria and is not likely to flee.

The prosecution, however, opposed the request, stressing that releasing the ex-governor could affect the case and warned that he might interfere with witnesses or disrupt ongoing investigations.

After hearing both arguments, Justice Rilwan Aikawa adjourned the case, saying the court’s decision on the bail application would be delivered on April 14, 2026.

Nasir El-Rufai was then remanded in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The former governor is facing charges linked to alleged financial misconduct and abuse of office brought by the commission.
