Nigeria trio makes 2025 CAF AFCON Best XI

Three Nigerian players made it into the 2025 AFCON Team of the Year despite the unit being dominated by Moroccan and Senegal players.

The recently ended AFCON had Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 to win the title in controversial fashion; Senegal’s Sadio Mane was named as the Player of the Year.

In the wake of the competition, CAF’s Technical Study Group announced the Team of the Tournament with Morocco having four players included.

Achraf Hakimi, 2025 AFCON Best Goalkeeper Award winner Yassine Bounou and 2025 AFCON Golden Boot winner Brahim Diaz represented Morocco in the team.

Senegal had four members of the victorious team included in the elite team including Sadio Mane, Pape Gueye and Gana Gueye.

Nigeria had Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen and Calvin Bassey represent the Super Eagles in the team that was put together after “remote and on-site assessments, supported by live data platforms, multi-angle video feeds and dedicated video analysts” according to CAF.
