Nigerian chef and content creator Tolani Tayo-Osikoya, popularly known as Chef T and the face behind Diary of a Kitchen Lover, has publicly announced her conversion from Christianity to Islam, opening up about a deeply personal journey that has spanned nearly a decade.
The food enthusiast shared the news in a video posted on her Instagram page on Monday, where she was seen preparing Iftar for her family.
In the video, she explained that she initially hesitated to speak about her decision due to the sensitive nature of religious conversations on social media. However, after much reflection, she felt ready to tell her story in her own words.
According to Chef T, her journey toward Islam began about nine years ago. Although she was born into a Christian family, her perspective began to evolve after she met and later married her Muslim husband.
She was quick to clarify that her decision to convert was entirely personal and not influenced by pressure from her husband or his family. Instead, she described it as a gradual process rooted in learning, understanding, and personal conviction.
She revealed that before their marriage, her husband’s family took time to explain the teachings of Islam to her, ensuring she had a clear understanding of the faith. This openness, she noted, allowed her to make an informed decision about her spiritual path.
Chef T also highlighted the role her own family played in her journey, stating that her parents were supportive of her decision. Their acceptance, she said, gave her the confidence to continue exploring and embracing her new faith without fear or doubt.
Over the years, she has experienced Islam in different countries, further deepening her understanding and connection to the religion. She described her journey as one of continuous learning, noting that she is still growing and discovering new aspects of the faith.
Speaking on the significance of the current Ramadan season, Chef T said it holds special meaning for her, as it is the first time she is reading the Quran with the intention of fully understanding its message.
She expressed a desire to improve in practicing key aspects of Islam, including the five pillars, while also sharing her hope to perform the Hajj pilgrimage in the future.
She concluded her message by encouraging people to focus less on differences and more on shared values, particularly how individuals treat one another. Her story has since sparked conversations online, with many reflecting on faith, personal growth, and the importance of respecting individual spiritual journeys.
