Nigerian creators dominated the 2025 TikTok Awards for Sub-Saharan Africa, winning six out of ten major categories at the star-studded ceremony held in Johannesburg.

The event, themed “New Era, New Icons,” celebrated creators who are redefining entertainment, digital storytelling, and cultural influence across Africa. While winners came from South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, and Ghana, Nigeria emerged as the biggest winner.

Shallipopi was named Artist of the Year, and Guinness World Record holder Brian Nwana took home Storyteller of the Year, highlighting Nigeria’s strong presence on the continental stage.

Boniswa Sidwaba, TikTok’s Head of Content Operations for Sub-Saharan Africa, praised the impact of Nigerian creators and the role of the community in their victories.

“With Nigerian creators securing six of the ten awards, we are honoured to celebrate their impact, especially as these victories were voted for by the TikTok community, who continue to champion the stories shaping culture,” she said.

“Tonight’s ceremony brought together the trailblazers redefining what it means to be a creator in Africa. It’s inspiring to see West African creators turn short videos into cultural movements and receive the recognition they deserve.”
