Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit has said she was “manipulated” by Jeffrey Epstein, as she addressed scrutiny over her past relationship with the disgraced financier in a televised interview.
Speaking to Norwegian broadcaster NRK, the crown princess expressed regret over their association, admitting she failed to properly investigate his background despite warning signs. Her name appeared multiple times in documents released earlier this year by the US Department of Justice, which revealed details of their connection and sparked public debate in Norway about her future role as queen.
“I wish I had never met him,” she said, adding that she had been “manipulated and deceived.” She also denied any inappropriate nature to their relationship, describing it as purely friendly.
Epstein, who pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor and later died in 2019 while awaiting trial on trafficking charges, had maintained contact with the princess over several years. Previously published emails showed she had acknowledged concerns about his past as early as 2011, writing that his history “didn’t look too good.”
During the interview, Mette-Marit described some of her past communications with Epstein as “embarrassing” and confirmed she eventually ended the relationship following incidents that made her feel uncomfortable, though she declined to provide details.
Appearing alongside her husband, Haakon, she emphasised that the real focus should remain on Epstein’s victims, stating they are the ones who deserve justice.
The interview marks her first public response since the extent of her ties to Epstein became widely known earlier this year. The controversy has added to ongoing personal challenges, including her chronic lung disease and legal issues involving her son, Marius Borg Høiby, who is facing serious criminal charges.
Despite the backlash, the crown princess said she remains committed to her role and intends to continue supporting the monarchy, health permitting, expressing confidence in the institution and her husband’s leadership.
