OSP launches investigation into alleged GH₵25.8m palm oil diversion scheme

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has initiated an investigation into a suspected corruption scheme involving the misappropriation of fifty 20-foot containers of palm oil, which are valued at GH₵25.8 million.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the shipment was initially declared as goods in transit to Burkina Faso.

However, authorities have stated that the consignment was illegally diverted into the local market in Ghana without the necessary payment of duties and taxes.

The anti-corruption agency revealed that preliminary findings suggest the involvement of certain Customs officers, National Security personnel, and clearing agents.

The alleged scheme is thought to have resulted in an estimated loss of GH₵10.5 million in tax revenue for the state.

The OSP noted that the investigation is a result of an intelligence-led operation carried out in November 2025, which uncovered irregularities related to the handling and clearance of the shipment.

While the investigations are still ongoing, the Office has reiterated its commitment to protecting public funds and ensuring accountability in the management of imports and transit goods.

The statement highlighted that the Special Prosecutor’s office remains dedicated to safeguarding the public purse and maintaining integrity in public administration as the investigative process continues.

In a related matter, 18 articulated trucks that were declared for transit to Niger, suspected to be part of a larger diversion scheme, were intercepted at the Akanu Border.

Post-inspection checks uncovered discrepancies in declared unit values, tariff classifications, and weights, which increased the estimated revenue exposure from GH¢2.6 million to over GH¢85 million.

These vehicles were intercepted by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) due to suspicions of irregularities.

The trucks were reportedly travelling without the required customs human escort, which constitutes a serious violation of established transit procedures.
