PDP Senate Caucus Endorses Party’s Leadership Role in 2027 Opposition Alliance

The Senate caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind plans for the party to spearhead a coalition of opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This position was confirmed by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, during a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

Senator Moro emphasized that the PDP, as Nigeria’s leading opposition party, has the structure and reach to unite other parties under a common banner aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

“The PDP remains the largest and most established opposition party in the country,” Moro stated. “We are ready to welcome and work with all other parties willing to form a coalition. The PDP is best placed to lead this initiative if and when it becomes necessary.”

The senator dismissed claims that the PDP is weakened by internal divisions and recent defections. He stressed that the party remains resilient and is actively addressing its internal issues.

He expressed optimism in the reconciliation efforts led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, noting that the committee is working to resolve lingering disputes and reposition the PDP for electoral success.

“No political party is immune to internal disagreements,” Moro said. “What matters is our capacity to resolve them, and the PDP is already doing that.”

Speaking on the broader state of Nigeria’s political environment, Senator Moro warned of the risks associated with a dominant one-party system, arguing that a healthy democracy thrives on diverse viewpoints and robust opposition.

The PDP’s renewed push to lead a united opposition signals early preparations for a competitive 2027 electoral season and a bid to consolidate influence after years in opposition.
