Peter Obi Reportedly Agrees to Be Atiku’s Running Mate for 2027 Presidential Election
In a major development that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, multiple sources have claimed that Peter Obi has agreed to run as Atiku Abubakar’s vice-presidential candidate.
According to a report by Punch, the deal was first discussed during a private meeting in the United Kingdom earlier this year between the former Vice President and the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Atiku’s One-Term Promise and Obi’s Alleged Acceptance
Insiders familiar with the meeting revealed that Atiku proposed a joint ticket with the promise to serve only a single four-year term, after which he would support Peter Obi as his successor in 2031.
A senior political figure disclosed:
“Atiku and Obi have agreed on a joint ticket. Atiku plans to serve just one term and hand over to Obi. Discussions are ongoing with loyalists on both sides to solidify this pact.”
Coalition in the Works: PDP, LP, or ADC?
Given the internal conflicts plaguing both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, sources say the duo is considering launching their joint ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“The Social Democratic Party (SDP) was an option, but it appears the ruling APC has infiltrated it,” said one insider. “Now, attention is shifting to the ADC, and some allies have already opened discussions with the party leadership.”
Official Response: Obidient Movement Denies Ongoing Discussions
Despite the buzz, Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, denied any knowledge of such developments.
“As far as I know, there is no such conversation happening. I just spoke with him [Peter Obi], and nothing like this was mentioned,” Tanko told the media.
What This Could Mean for 2027
As Nigeria gears up for a potentially heated 2027 presidential race, a coalition between Atiku and Obi could present a strong challenge to incumbent President Bola Tinubu. Political analysts believe this alliance—if confirmed—could unify opposition forces and shift electoral dynamics significantly.
