Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has extended heartfelt support to the people of Niger State following the devastating floods that recently struck Mokwa and surrounding communities.
During a condolence visit to the state, Obi donated ₦20 million to aid victims and support ongoing relief efforts.
Former Minister of Finance Sen. Nenadi Usman and Dr. Yunusa Tanko accompanied him. He was received by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who stood in for Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
“Heartbreaking” Scene of Devastation
Describing the scale of the disaster as heartbreaking, Obi recounted the enormous toll:

More than 3,000 displaced

Homes and properties completely destroyed
Obi disclosed that even while abroad in the United Kingdom, he had reached out to Governor Bago via phone to express his condolences.
Obi Urges Unity and Swift Government Response
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi emphasized the need for collective national empathy and proactive support in times of crisis.
“This incident and others happening across the country affect us all. As a nation, we must come together to care, comfort, and support one another, especially in times of collective grief and hardship,” he stated.
He praised the swift response from the Niger State Government and emergency responders, and urged the Federal Government, NEMA, and well-meaning Nigerians to provide urgent aid.
Personal Donation and Pledge of Continued Support
To reinforce his commitment, Obi announced a personal donation of ₦20 million toward relief and rebuilding efforts, pledging continued support for the long road to recovery.
“May God comfort the families of the deceased, protect those still missing, and grant healing and strength to all affected. I pray Niger State finds peace and full restoration,” he added.
One of Niger State’s Deadliest Disasters
The flooding is being described as one of the deadliest in Niger State’s history, sparking nationwide concern and reigniting calls for a more coordinated, proactive disaster management strategy across Nigeria.
