Bashir Ahmad, former presidential aide, has publicly disagreed with Peter Obi’s response to the life sentence handed to Nnamdi Kanu, highlighting concerns over national security and justice.
In a post on his verified X account on Saturday, 22 November 2025, Ahmad questioned Obi’s call for “dialogue, constructive engagement, and inclusivity” regarding Kanu’s conviction, likening it to Sheikh Ahmad Gumi’s advocacy for amnesty and negotiations with armed bandits in northern Nigeria. Ahmad argued that applying the same approach to individuals responsible for terror and abductions is inconsistent and dangerous.
Obi had reacted to Kanu’s November 20, 2025 conviction by the Federal High Court in Abuja on seven terrorism charges, resulting in a life sentence. He suggested that the trial could worsen national tensions amid economic challenges and insecurity, calling for empathy, reforms, and inclusive governance as tools to prevent further unrest.
Ahmad countered by accusing Obi of being a “terrorist apologist,” emphasizing that while dialogue may be appropriate in some political contexts, Kanu’s actions—like those of bandit groups—warrant accountability. He stressed the importance of consistent policies in addressing separatist movements, terrorism, and criminality to maintain Nigeria’s cohesion.
The debate reflects ongoing national discussions on handling groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), proscribed as a terrorist organization in 2017, and highlights the tension between pursuing political resolutions and enforcing justice.
