Argentine authorities habe carried out raids on the headquarters of the national football federation and several top football clubs as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation, a police source told AFP. Acting on the orders of a judge, officers searched the offices of the Argentine Football Federation south of Buenos Aires, as well as the premises of major teams including Racing Club, San Lorenzo, Independiente and Banfield.
“So far there have been 25 to 30 raids of teams and private homes,” the source said, confirming that the federation headquarters was among the locations searched. Investigators are seeking accounting and financial records linked to Sur Finanzas, a finance company that sponsors several clubs and is suspected of financial malpractice.
Last month, Argentine tax authorities filed a formal complaint against Sur Finanzas, accusing the firm of evading taxes on transactions amounting to the peso equivalent of 550 million dollars. The company has been heavily involved in football related business deals, and its chief executive, Ariel Vallejo, is said to be close to the president of the Argentine Football Federation, Claudio Tapia.
Sur Finanzas was also the official sponsor of the Argentine football league and the national team last year, placing the company at the centre of one of the most significant financial probes to hit Argentine football in recent years.
