Controversial Nigerian singer Portable has expressed frustration over what he describes as disappointing earnings from digital streaming platforms, despite consistently releasing new music.
In a video circulating online, the “Zazu” crooner lamented that the revenue he generates from Apple Music does not reflect the effort he puts into dropping songs regularly or the level of support he believes he receives from fans both locally and internationally.
“I am in pain, I have been putting my song on Apple Music every month but the money I am generating is too low,” he said.
The singer explained that he had previously been told that streams from Nigeria tend to generate lower revenue compared to other regions. However, he questioned why his international fan base has not translated into higher income.
“They said it is because Nigerian streams are cheap but I also have fans in America and all over the world. Where is the revenue from those foreign streams?” he asked.
Seeking guidance, Portable reached out publicly to renowned music executive Don Jazzy, asking for mentorship on how to better monetise his music on streaming platforms.
“Don Jazzy, please, help me and teach me how to generate more money from music streams. I have Apple Music account but the revenue that I receive is very low. They divide my earnings into 17. Please, come and teach me how to fetch music money,” he appealed.
Portable further stated that gaining a proper understanding of how streaming revenue works could significantly elevate his career. According to him, the right knowledge could place him among the top artistes in the country.
“If Don Jazzy teach me how to generate more money from streaming platforms, I would be bigger than all artistes in Nigeria,” he added.
The singer’s comments have sparked conversations online about the realities of music streaming revenue, especially for Nigerian artists. Many industry observers note that while digital platforms provide global exposure, earnings often depend on factors such as listener location, distribution deals, and streaming volume.
Portable’s outcry highlights a growing concern among artists seeking to maximise income in an increasingly digital music industry.
