Reactions as Catholic Priest Shoots Teenager Dead After He Set Off Knockouts in Church Premises

Priest Allegedly Shoots Teenager Over Fireworks During New Year Mass in Imo State

According to a report published by Vanguard, a tragic incident occurred during a New Year Mass at St. Columba’s Catholic Church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria, on January 1, 2025. A Catholic priest allegedly shot and killed a teenage boy after the boy set off fireworks, also known as “knockouts,” within the church premises.

Eyewitnesses stated that the fireworks caused panic among worshippers during the service. In response, the priest, identified as Reverend Father Joseph Enyinaya, reportedly drew a gun and fired, fatally wounding the boy. The shocking incident has left the community in mourning, with many calling for a thorough investigation.

The event has sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some Nigerians have condemned the priest’s actions, others have sought to defend him, citing the insecurity in the region.

One Facebook user, Buka Tee, commented, “Please let there be a proper and comprehensive investigation regarding this matter. It should not be swept under the carpet.” Another user, Malachy Chukwunyereugo, wrote, “He will spend the rest of his life in prison.”

Conversely, some individuals sympathized with the priest. A user named Icha Joseph said, “The Rev Father acted in self-defense. Priests are being murdered every day in the East. They can’t be too careful.” Another person questioned the teenager’s actions, stating, “How can you target fireworks at worshippers during service rather than toward the sky?”

The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the incident and launched an investigation to uncover the facts. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye assured the public that further details would be shared as soon as possible.
