Return to your country to face justice – Arise Ghana tells Ofori-Atta

Members of the advocacy group Arise Ghana organised a demonstration on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the United States Embassy in Accra, demanding the repatriation of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to Ghana to confront legal proceedings.

The demonstrators, who assembled outside the embassy grounds, urged U.S. officials to collaborate with Ghanaian authorities to facilitate Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return, emphasising that accountability must be upheld without exception.

The group stated that the purpose of the protest was to reinforce their demand for the former finance minister to “return to Ghana to face justice,” contending that no public servant should be permitted to escape accountability.

The protesters displayed placards with messages such as “Let Ofori-Atta Face Justice,” “Ken’s Leadership Killed Ghanaians,” and “Ken Is Needed in Ghana”.

Additionally, some participants donned T-shirts featuring the slogan “Bring Ken”.

In remarks to the press, a member of the group and PNC stalwart, Bernard Monah, indicated that the protest would persist until U.S. authorities take action to ensure Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana.

“We are all aware that currently, Ken Ofori-Atta is no longer unwell. He travelled to the U.S. for medical treatment, and now he has recovered and overstayed his visa,” Mr. Monah claimed. “When he was alerted about a potential arrest, he proceeded to apply for permanent residency in America”.

He further stated, “This indicates that he has no intention of returning to Ghana. He is evading the opportunity to confront justice”.

Mr. Monah mentioned that the group had initially intended to conduct an indefinite protest but reached a consensus with the police.

“Thus, today marks the commencement. We will remain here from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and we will return tomorrow as well.

“We have agreed with the police to protest for a duration of two weeks. Following this period, we have resolved to conduct a sleepover here until the U.S. recognises the necessity to bring Ken Ofori-Atta back,” he stated.

In the meantime, Mr. Ofori-Atta is anticipated to appear in a U.S. court on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, regarding alleged immigration violations.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has stated that Mr. Ofori-Atta exceeded the duration of his visitor visa and has forfeited his legal right to stay in the United States.

A decision regarding potential extradition to Ghana may follow the court proceedings.
