The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has revealed plans to contest the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) recent ruling that stripped Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, awarding the championship to Morocco.

On Tuesday, the CAF Appeals Board overturned the previous decision of its Disciplinary Committee, declaring that Senegal forfeited the AFCON final. The ruling followed a series of incidents during the match, including multiple Senegalese players leaving the field in protest over a referee’s call. CAF cited violations of Articles 82 and 84 of the tournament regulations as the basis for the forfeiture. Morocco had initially appealed the earlier dismissal of its protest, which challenged the legitimacy of Senegal’s on-field conduct.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the FSF condemned the ruling as “unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable,” describing it as damaging to African football’s reputation. The federation confirmed that it would escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

“To defend the rights of Senegalese football and protect the integrity of our teams, the FSF will promptly file an appeal before CAS,” the statement read. “We remain committed to upholding the principles of integrity and sporting justice and will keep the public informed as the case progresses.”

The Appeals Board responsible for the ruling comprises nine members and is chaired by Nigerian judge Roli Daibo Harriman. CAF’s decision has sparked intense debate across the continent, raising questions about the enforcement of regulations during high-stakes matches and the precedent it sets for future tournaments.

Senegal’s AFCON 2025 campaign had initially been celebrated for strong performances throughout the competition. However, the controversial events in the final against Morocco led to widespread scrutiny, culminating in the Appeals Board’s decision to award Morocco the title 3-0 by forfeiture.

Observers note that Senegal’s move to appeal highlights the growing role of international arbitration in African football disputes. By taking the matter to CAS, the FSF aims to secure a review of both procedural and substantive aspects of the ruling, potentially challenging the interpretation of CAF’s disciplinary regulations.

The ruling has already created a ripple effect among fans, analysts, and stakeholders in African football. Supporters of Senegal have expressed outrage over what they perceive as an overly harsh decision, while others argue that adherence to rules regarding player conduct is essential to maintaining fair play standards in continental competitions.

CAF, for its part, maintains that its decision was grounded in the regulations governing AFCON, emphasizing the need for accountability during official matches. The organisation also addressed related infractions, including off-field conduct and breaches of security protocol, as part of the comprehensive disciplinary review.

The outcome of Senegal’s appeal at CAS could have significant implications for African football, particularly in terms of how disciplinary matters are adjudicated in future tournaments. A successful appeal may restore the title to Senegal, while a rejection would solidify Morocco’s championship status, leaving a lasting mark on AFCON history.

As the case develops, football fans and stakeholders across Africa will be closely watching for updates on Senegal’s legal challenge, which promises to be one of the most closely followed disputes in recent African football history.
