The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, says today’s children face unprecedented distractions from the internet and technology, which can pull them away from the classroom.
He emphasised the need for patience and strategies to keep children engaged in learning.
Speaking to the media after the Ningo-Prampram District Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service, in collaboration with the Office of the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, honoured 17 exceptional teachers for their dedication and service to education in the district, he said today’s children live in a difficult world, adding that the distractions of the internet and technology are enough to take them away from the classroom.
Responding to Australia’s recent ban on children under 14–15 accessing social media platforms, especially adult content sites, Minister Nartey George revealed that Ghana is closely monitoring the situation.
He said the Cyber Security Authority has been tasked to draft a policy regulating children’s online access, particularly to photographic and social media sites.
If approved by Cabinet, the policy could give authorities the mandate to direct internet service providers and mobile operators to enforce restrictions similar to measures being implemented in the U.K. The ministry says the move aims to protect children’s learning environments and promote safe, responsible use of technology.
