According to our reporter, the Nigeria Police Force has clarified the arrest of activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore in Abuja amid the ongoing FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign.
The police stated that Sowore allegedly led protesters into a restricted zone in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), violating a court order prohibiting gatherings in certain areas. Earlier, 13 protesters were arrested in connection with Monday’s demonstration, with statements indicating Sowore guided them into the banned zones.
At a press briefing, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer, said it would be unfair to charge only the protesters without including the person who allegedly led them. Sowore was apprehended outside the Federal High Court shortly after attending in support of Nnamdi Kanu.
Authorities confirmed that Sowore will be charged and arraigned promptly, with custody not exceeding 24 hours, similar to the other detainees. The police emphasized their commitment to enforcing the court order while ensuring due process.
