Public affairs analyst Mahdi Shehu has sparked fresh debate after posting a strongly worded reflection on Nigeria’s political journey over the past decade. In a statement shared on his official X account, Shehu argued that many of the political figures who criticised former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014 have failed to deliver the progress they promised Nigerians.
Shehu claimed that the individuals he described as “Jonathan blackmailers” performed poorly in governance and contributed to worsening national challenges. He accused them of overseeing rising insecurity, displacement, unemployment, and business closures—conditions he argued are worse today than they were a decade ago.
Recalling events from 2014, Shehu said some political leaders travelled to the United States to seek foreign intervention, insisting Jonathan could no longer manage the country’s security issues. He alleged that various groups—including religious and community figures—were used to intensify public criticism and weaken the administration’s credibility.
According to Shehu, Jonathan eventually stepped aside to prevent deeper national tension, describing the former president as a leader who “chose peace over power.” He added that the same politicians who criticised him have not met the expectations they set for Nigerians, pointing to current insecurity levels and rising poverty as evidence.
His comments have generated discussions online, with many Nigerians revisiting political events from the past decade.
