Prince Adewole Adebayo, Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, has raised concerns about the transparency of Nigeria’s electoral process, particularly regarding the appointment of key election officials. The remarks were made during an interview with SYMFONI TV.
Adebayo alleged that critical decisions affecting the nation’s elections are often made behind closed doors, without public consultation or legislative oversight. “The cat is out of the bag because they have already appointed the man who is going to be in charge of elections for the next five years,” he said, suggesting that the process may be predetermined and influenced by vested political interests.
He stressed that meaningful electoral reform must extend beyond the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), encompassing reforms within political parties, campaign financing, and candidate selection procedures. According to Adebayo, transparency in these areas is essential to maintain public confidence in the democratic process.
The SDP presidential hopeful called for a more participatory and accountable approach to appointments within the electoral system. He warned that failing to ensure openness would continue to erode trust in elections and weaken democratic governance.
Adebayo concluded by urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and demand accountability, emphasizing that credible elections, driven by integrity, are fundamental to sustaining democracy in the country.
