At the recent Arewa Consultative Forum in Abuja, former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi highlighted injustice as the root of Nigeria’s challenges, urging urgent reforms to address the marginalization of Igboland.
Speaking at the northern socio-political gathering, Amaechi did not hold back, linking Nigeria’s insecurity and economic struggles to systemic unfairness. The Rivers State native, who has often aligned with Igbo cultural causes, stressed that denying economic opportunities fuels crime and instability. “Those out of school aren’t becoming farmers; they’re left vulnerable,” he noted, drawing attention to how neglect can push youths toward violence and kidnapping.
Focusing on the southeast, Amaechi called for justice for the Igbo people, citing historical grievances, including post-civil war policies that sidelined the region. He encouraged Arewa leaders to engage with other ethnic groups to negotiate a fairer federation. “The government isn’t ready to protect anybody,” he warned, criticizing current security management. His remarks sparked conversations among attendees about equity, education, and collective responsibility.
Reactions were mixed. Some lauded his candidness as a push for national unity, while others questioned his selective recall of past political roles. Nevertheless, Amaechi’s speech underscores a growing demand for reform in a nation still grappling with ethnic divisions and economic hardship.
