Kalabari chieftain Asari Dokubo has expressed strong disapproval over claims that the Quran instructs Muslims to kill people of other faiths, describing such interpretations as misleading and contrary to Islamic teachings. He made the remarks in a video posted on Facebook, emphasizing that the scripture advocates self‑defence—not unprovoked violence.
Dokubo explained that his understanding comes from thoroughly studying the Quran from beginning to end. According to him, the holy book only permits Muslims to confront aggressors and defend themselves when attacked. He noted that this principle aligns with universal laws that recognize the right of individuals and communities to protect their lives.
Quoting a passage from the Quran, he said: “The Quran says, attack them wherever they attack you, and chase them out wherever they chase you out.” Dokubo stressed that this guidance does not justify harming innocent people or targeting individuals based on their beliefs. Instead, it underscores the right to self‑preservation, a value he said is shared across religious and secular systems.
He added that both the Quran and the Bible uphold the sanctity of human life, maintaining that no human being has the authority to take another person’s life without just cause.
