According to our report, Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has called on Nigeria to implement laws similar to Ghana’s to curb frequent political defections. Speaking at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, Kukah highlighted how Ghana’s Constitution immediately removes any elected official who abandons their party, triggering a new election within 42 days—while barring the defector from running.
Kukah explained that this strict regulation ensures political discipline, strengthens parties, and upholds voters’ trust. He warned that Nigeria’s lack of such laws fuels instability, allowing politicians to switch allegiances for personal gain, undermining democratic representation.
“These defections cannot happen in Ghana. It’s not because people aren’t angry or hungry, but because the law stops it,” he said, urging immediate legal reforms to make Nigeria’s democracy more accountable and resilient.
