A violent attack on a Christ Apostolic Church in Oke-Isegba, Ekiti Local Government Area, left three worshippers dead and 35 others abducted, raising concerns about religiously targeted violence in the region.
According to reports from The Punch, the assault occurred on November 18 during a thanksgiving service meant to celebrate the recent release of 18 previously kidnapped members. Eyewitnesses initially mistook the first gunshots for firecrackers celebrating the harvest season, but the sounds quickly escalated into what resembled continuous machine-gun fire. Worshippers had little chance to escape as gunmen stormed the church.
Pastor Kenneth Adigoke, Ekiti Local Government Area Coordinator for the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), suggested that the attack had clear religious motivations. “They entered the church, killed three and kidnapped 35. If Christians call it targeted genocide, they are not wrong,” he told The Punch.
The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges facing religious communities in Nigeria and the urgent need for protective measures.
