A survivor of the November 18 attack on Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Eruku in Kwara State, has shared a chilling account of how gunmen abducted 38 worshippers. The man described the attackers’ overwhelming control of the area, saying escape was impossible, and highlighted the challenges security forces face in combating such armed groups.
According to the survivor, the assault began shortly after the evening service had started. Initially mistaking the gunshots for electrical sparks, worshippers quickly realized the church was surrounded. The attackers swiftly took control, pushing the congregation into dense bushland far from the building.
The gunmen openly identified themselves, boasting about their operations and intimate knowledge of the forest terrain. “They made us know that there is no one who can slip away without being caught,” the survivor said, noting the captors’ confidence in controlling every path and hidden route within the region.
The ordeal exposed the kidnappers’ organisation and dominance in the area. The survivor recalled the fear induced by the attackers’ familiarity with the land, which made evading them seem impossible. His account underscores how deeply entrenched such armed groups are and the difficulty faced by security forces in rescuing victims.
While the eventual rescue of the 38 abducted worshippers brought relief to families, the survivor’s testimony highlights the ongoing threat these groups pose and the need for continued vigilance.
