Popular social media critic VeryDarkMan has once again stirred conversation online after reacting to a controversial statement made by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, aimed at former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi.
In a viral video, Governor Okpebholo warned Peter Obi against entering Edo State without his explicit approval. The governor linked his warning to a past incident where Obi donated ₦15 million to a nursing school during a visit to Benin City—a visit he claimed led to unrest and fatalities.
But VeryDarkMan isn’t buying it.
“This Is Hate Speech. I Apologize on Behalf of Edo People” – VDM
In a bold video response, VeryDarkMan—real name Martins Otse—called out Governor Okpebholo for what he termed “preaching hate.”
“On behalf of Edo people, I apologize to Peter Obi and all Nigerians,” he said. “This is not who we are. This is becoming a dangerous pattern.”
VDM pointed out that this isn’t the first time a governor from an APC-led state has issued warnings to Obi. He referenced Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, who had earlier also cautioned Obi in a separate incident.
The outspoken critic suggested there’s a coordinated attempt by governors in states where Obi won in the 2023 elections to intimidate or attack him ahead of the 2027 polls.
Mixed Reactions Trail VDM’s Comment
The internet erupted after VDM posted his video, with netizens weighing in from all sides. While many hailed him for courageously defending Peter Obi, others questioned the political tension escalating this early into the election cycle.
Here are some reactions:
-
@UC_Emeliem: “If they can issue this kind of threat to Peter Obi in public, imagine what they do behind closed doors to ordinary Nigerians. This is dangerous!”
-
@youmustbegood11: “There’s no difference between that governor and Portable. Maybe Portable go even rule better.”
-
@rwg6cdcpjx: “If VDM runs for office, I’m voting him. Guy has sense.”
-
@fortunateozuyak: “Edo people are not like this, but unfortunately our governor is.”
-
@Dinovo01414: “He didn’t even win that seat fair. Edo people voted PDP not this guy.”
The Backstory
Peter Obi, known for his clean-cut image and large youth support base, continues to face what many describe as politically motivated pushback, especially from states controlled by the ruling APC.
Governor Okpebholo’s warning, though lacking formal power to bar a citizen, has been viewed by many as an attempt to intimidate a strong opposition voice.
Meanwhile, VeryDarkMan, who has grown in popularity for speaking truth to power, shows no signs of backing down. He’s even fortified himself spiritually, recently visiting a shrine in his Edo hometown of Agenebode, on his father’s instruction.
What Do You Think? Should Governors Be Able to “Ban” Opponents From Their States?
