A TikTok influencer has issued an apology after admitting she faked having cancer.
Brittany Miller, 29, has grown an online following of more than 3.5 million followers, sharing snippets of her daily life with her twin toddlers, fashion hauls and food content.
However, she has now broken down in tears, revealing that she was convicted of fraud after lying about having stage three gastric cancer.
Speaking directly to her followers in a video shared online last night, Nov. 10, Brittany began by saying: “So I never wanted to talk about this time in my life, because it was a very difficult time for me. But I owe it to my followers and people who support me to tell my truth.
“I also want to put a stop to the people who are twisting and exaggerating what actually happened. So, I am just going to go from the beginning.”
Struggling to speak through her tears, Brittany said that in 2017 she’d been suffering from “extremely bad mental health” and was “depressed and suicidal, and confused”.
At that time, she faced a relationship breakdown and lost her job, events she said were part of ‘lots of things led me to being mentally ill”.
She then went on to tell a friend that she “had an illness”, which she “deeply regretted”.
“I said I had cancer. I didn’t do this for malicious intent or to scam people.
“I did this out of desperation and to keep the people in my life close to me. I don’t condone it. I don’t know why I did it. But I’ve learnt from my mistakes.”
Brittany went on to share she did not undertake a “long-running scam” or a “manipulative story like it’s made out to be”.
After the people she told ended up sharing what Brittany had said with others, there was a fundraising page set up on her behalf.
“As soon as I saw there were donations – there were two donations – I immediately had the page shut down,” she explained.
“I didn’t take a penny from it.”
Reflecting on what unfolded, the influencer said she has “grown from this” and was “working on being the best version of myself”.
“It took me a long time to understand why I did it, and I forgive myself, because I was mentally ill. I am so deeply sorry to anyone that I’ve upset or triggered from saying what I’ve said.
“I wasn’t on social media at the time. This was years earlier. I didn’t do this for likes or followers. I know how horrible this disease is, and how much it affects people. So, for that I am so, so sorry.”
At the time, Brittany apologised for her actions, but a year later, she moved away from her hometown to try and get “better” and surround herself with people who were “going to help her”.
She then got a job for a fundraising company, where she met her now husband, Ash Griffiths, with whom she shares identical twins, Elijah and Emiliano.
“He was my light at the end of the tunnel. He helped me be well again and forgive myself,” she said.
“I am now mentally well again and am so proud of how far I’ve come. I want to now be an advocate for mental health too.”
She continued: “I want to say thank you to everyone out there who supported me. When you didn’t know my truth, you still believed in me.
“If I could go back and change it, I would do it in a heartbeat. It was one stupid sentence I said almost a decade ago, and I’ve learnt so much for it.
“I am so, so grateful for you all. So, thank you.”
Since the video has been shared, Brittany has largely been flooded with support.
The Sun reported that police confirmed Brittany was convicted of her crime – fraud by false representation.
In July 2020, she was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and was forced to pay compensation and costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.
