The Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah, has described President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari as part of Nigeria’s cycle of accidental leaders. He stated that many past leaders came into power unprepared, which has contributed to the country’s leadership challenges, according to a report by PUNCH.
Kukah made this statement on Sunday during a keynote address in Abuja at the commissioning of Start-Rite School’s new building and the 4th Amaka Ndoma-Egba Memorial Lecture.
He emphasized that many Nigerian leaders assumed office due to unexpected circumstances, rather than clear plans or preparation. According to Kukah, effective governance requires deep knowledge, which he argued is often lacking in the country.
The cleric further pointed out that, even under democracy, leadership in Nigeria faces significant challenges. He expressed concern that the system is not delivering the expected results.
“If we are to start from the beginning, you will find that almost every leader who came to power in Nigeria did so as a result of one accident or another. President Tinubu, who said he was prepared for the role, is struggling. We are still trying to get off the ground. He took over from Buhari, who had already given up,” Kukah said.
