According to our reporter, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the arrest of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore by police officers following a peaceful protest calling for the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.
The incident, which occurred inside a courthouse, sparked outrage over the government’s handling of nonviolent demonstrations. Atiku described the arrest as a “clear act of tyranny,” accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of becoming increasingly intolerant of dissenting opinions.
He argued that such actions violate the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and free expression. “Arresting Sowore in a courtroom — a place that symbolizes justice — shows deep disrespect for the rule of law,” Atiku stated.
According to him, the government could have avoided the situation by engaging in dialogue rather than intimidation. He reminded those in power that they once benefited from public protests and should not now turn against citizens exercising the same right.
Atiku warned that silencing critics will only deepen public distrust in the government’s commitment to justice and fairness. He urged authorities to respect civil rights and promote unity instead of division.
“In the past, those who are now in power thrived on demonstrations,” Atiku said. “But Tinubu continues to show Nigerians exactly who he is — and what he intends to be — if we allow him.”
